- M4.7 - Explosive eruption of Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano with M4.7 earthquake
On November 23, 2025, at approximately 08:55:02 UTC, a massive eruption occurred at the Erta Ale (Hayli Gubbi) volcano in Ethiopia, located in the remote Danakil Depression on the Afar Fault. The ash plume, reaching a height of about 15 km and accompanied by significant sulfur dioxide emissions, quickly drifted as far as Yemen and Oman, and even reached Iran, Pakistan, and India.
According to unconfirmed sources, this volcano had been dormant for over 10,000 years, awakening with a massive ash explosion that reached thousands of kilometers and a height of 15 to 20 kilometers.
The event triggered an earthquake at 8:55:02 AM with a magnitude of 4.7.
It is a remote area of Ethiopia, so there are no reported casualties. The government has not yet released any official data.
Moderate earthquakes had already occurred in the area approximately one to two months prior, which was unusual, despite the convergence of several fault lines in the region, but nothing indicated an imminent volcanic eruption.
