Any other method requesting your username or password should be considered a fraudulent email.
Any sensitive data, such as your password, is always stored encrypted in our system and in a single location, so this data will never be known in its original form. The user is responsible for their password. To change it, the only possible method is through the "Forgot Password" option in our system, which will send a reset link to your email address.
Under no circumstances does EQCitizen.org share any private information about its users with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social network that may be added in the future. Its sole purpose is as stated here. In this regard, all information that users choose to provide to these platforms is their sole responsibility, and EQCitizen.org will not be involved in this process.
PURPOSE OF PROCESSING DATA FROM SEISMIC STATIONS
The data collected by seismic stations provided by users is compiled and processed for the specific purposes indicated below:
• Seismic detection and monitoring: processing signals and telemetry to detect, locate, and characterize seismic events, generate alerts, and feed real-time models and visualizations.
• Scientific research: facilitating access to time series, metadata, and derived products (e.g., event catalogs, spectra, filtered logs) for researchers and academic centers for geophysical studies, model calibration, and reproducibility work.
• Operational services and network improvement: using the data for the maintenance, diagnosis, and optimization of the station network (calibration, fault detection, firmware updates, and configuration adjustments).
• Sharing with authorized third parties: sharing data with public bodies (administrations, emergency services), private entities (research institutes, engineering companies), and collaborators, always for technical, scientific, risk prevention, or related service provision purposes.
• Legal compliance and institutional cooperation: providing data when required by law, by administrative resolution, or to collaborate with civil protection and public safety actions.
• Statistics and aggregation: creating aggregated datasets and derived (anonymous) products for statistical analysis, public reports, and dissemination without identifying individual users or their exact location.
PROCESSING OF LOCATION AND GEOLOCATION MITIGATION REQUESTS
The station's location (coordinates) is a technical metadata necessary for event location.
• If a user requests to avoid precise geolocation, EQCitizen may offer alternatives: blurring/cropping coordinates (reducing accuracy), publishing only the location at the municipal/provincial level, or not publishing the coordinates publicly and keeping them only in internal records accessible upon justified request.
• All requests to modify coordinates must be made in writing and will be handled according to internal procedures; in cases where accuracy is critical for public safety or an official investigation, there may be technical or legal limitations to the complete removal of the location.
PRIVACY PROTECTION AND ANONYMIZATION
• Whenever possible and compatible with the purpose, shared data is anonymized or aggregated to prevent direct identification of the exact location of the equipment or the user.
• Personal identifiers that could link a station to a natural person are separated from seismic data before being shared with third parties, unless there is explicit consent from the data subject or a legal obligation to do so.
• When data is shared at an individual level for operational or research purposes, the user will be informed and, where appropriate, their consent will be requested.
RETENTION, SECURITY, AND ACCESS
• Data will be retained for the time necessary for the stated purposes, respecting minimum retention periods for research and ensuring reproducibility; it will be deleted or anonymized when it is no longer needed, unless there is a legal obligation to retain it.
• EQCitizen applies reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect data against unauthorized access, alteration, loss, or improper disclosure (access control, encryption in transit/at rest, audit logs).
• Users may request information about their station data, metadata correction (including coordinates as described), portability, or deletion under the terms provided by applicable regulations.
PURPOSES OF SHARING AND CONDITIONS OF USE BY THIRD PARTIES
• Third parties receiving data must use it exclusively for authorized purposes (research, services, risk prevention) and respect the confidentiality, attribution, and use restrictions imposed by EQCitizen.org.
• Where appropriate, data will be shared under licenses or agreements that specify:
◦ the prohibition of illicit uses or uses contrary to scientific ethics;
• The obligation to cite the source (EQCitizen) and the referring URL when publishing derived results;
• The obligation not to attempt to re-identify individuals without express authorization.
ADDITIONAL CLAUSE ON ATTRIBUTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF STATIONS
1. Mandatory Acknowledgment in Publications Any entity, company, organization, or individual (hereinafter, “third party”) that uses data from seismic stations managed by EQCitizen.org and publishes results, analyses, scientific articles, technical reports, presentations, infographics, maps, or other derived material, is required to clearly and visibly indicate the name of the source station involved in the study or the data used.
2. Form of Attribution Attribution must appear in a reasonably visible location in the published product (for example, in the methods section, in the figure/map legend, in the credits, or in the acknowledgments section) and include, at least, the name of the station and a reference to EQCitizen.org (for example: “Data: Station [STATION_NAME], EQCitizen.org”). It is recommended, where possible, to include the URL https://eqcitizen.org and, if applicable, the station's technical identifier.
3. Recommended Citation To ensure uniformity and facilitate traceability, EQCitizen.org suggests the following minimum citation: “Seismic data: Station [STATION_NAME] (EQCitizen.org). https://eqcitizen.org”
4. Scope This obligation applies to both commercial and non-commercial publications, including publications in scientific journals, preprints, data repositories, promotional material, commissioned reports, and content disseminated in digital or print media.
5. Restrictions and Best Practices Third parties may not falsely attribute technical authorship of the hardware or firmware design to EQCitizen.org or present the station as their property if it is not. If a third party makes adaptations or additional processing, they must specify in the attribution that the results are based on data from the original station and indicate that the processing is their own.
6. Control, Compliance, and Remedies: EQCitizen.org reserves the right to:
• request the correction or inclusion of the attribution when omissions are detected;
• demand the temporary removal or public rectification of the reference if the attribution is incorrect or misleading;
• initiate any appropriate contractual, administrative, or legal actions to protect the reputation and rights of the contributor community.
• In addition, EQCitizen.org may notify publishers, repositories, or funders of non-compliance when appropriate. 7. Incentive and public recognition In order to reward citizen collaboration, EQCitizen.org may, at its discretion, maintain public lists of stations and their contributions, grant mentions in reports and outreach materials, and provide a reference (citation) format that third parties can automatically incorporate into their publications.
