- M7.4 - M7.4 earthquake - 102 km E of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia VII DYFI. Depth 59.0 km
Documented arrival of the M7.4 earthquake with tsunami warning from Kamchatka at the citizen seismic station EQ002 in Girona, over 9,000 km away. Full video of the earthquake
This earthquake was clearly captured by the citizen EQ002 station installed in Girona, more than 9,000 km from the epicenter. The video shows the STA/LTA alarms triggering as the waves arrive, along with the globalquake.net software, which displays the seismic stations lighting up as the P-wave passes. The video also shows the arrival of the P-wave in real time with professional seismic stations in the Girona area, allowing for a comparison of the alert times with these professional stations.
The advantage of combining all these tools is that it allows for real-time verification of events, as well as on-site investigation of the spectrogram shape, which shows the distribution of the earthquake's force across different frequency ranges (Hz). Both the spectrogram and the frequency-based alarms help in studying these events, demonstrating that even though the station is a citizen, it is capable of detecting these ground movements from more than 9,000 km away.
The NOAA agency, within minutes of issuing the tsunami warning, indicated that waves could reach between 0.3 and 1 meter in height, possibly along the Russian coast. It did not list any other affected areas.
The following seismogram shows the waveform recorded by station EQ002, filtered between 0.7 and 3.0 Hz. As seen in the video and the earthquake data sheet below, it is a correct average of all the frequencies that triggered the STA/LTA alarms.
